The Philippines was included as one of the world’s top 50 safest countries in a recent 2020 Global Law and Order survey by American analytics.

US-based analytics firm Gallup released a report wherein the Philippines ranked 39 among 144 countries, with a rating of 84% that’s tied with countries, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Serbia.

According to the Gallup poll, Filipino citizens feel safe and confident with their local police and law enforcement agencies, as the study measures the resident’s views and experiences towards their country’s security, as well as crime and law enforcement.

Participants around the globe were asked to answer the following questions:

  1. In the city or area where you live, do you have confidence in the local police force?

  2. Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?

  3. Within the last 12 months, have you had money or property stolen from you or another household member?

  4. Within the past 12 months, have you been assaulted or mugged?

“The higher the score, the higher the proportion of the population that reports feeling safe,” Gallup explained.

Countries that made it to the top 5 were Singapore (97), Turkmenistan (97), China (94), Iceland (93), and Kuwait (93).

In President Rodrigo Duterte's weekly address to the nation, he revealed he was surprised after knowing the Philippines gained a high rating in the said survey.

“I was really surprised… so if it’s a recent Gallup survey, it only shows that, well, we have to credit the police and military and the other uniformed services of government who have toiled to make this country at least very peaceful,” he said.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, welcomed the survey’s report saying the results were reassuring and that Filipinos appreciated what the government has been doing to prevent criminality.

“The government is even more committed to maintaining its current efforts against crime and drugs following the Philippines' excellent standing in a prestigious worldwide survey on people's views on their security,” DILG said.

Filipino Skepticism

Gallup is a global analytics and advice firm recognized by experts and scientists as a credible institution with a reputation for impartial and fair work.

However, some Filipinos were skeptical of the information provided, saying that the data does not reflect actual events in the country, especially with recent issues of celebrities being red-tagged.

A concern regarding the sampling and data gathering was also raised by Filipinos.

The analytics firm’s website provided a fairly general step-by-step process of how they gathered their samples, adding a disclaimer that not all parts of each country were included due to various reasons.

"With some exceptions, all samples are probability-based and nationally representative of the resident population aged 15 and older. The coverage area is the entire country including rural areas, and the sampling frame represents the entire civilian, non-institutionalized adult population of the country," their website stated.

Nonetheless, the firm affirmed that the samples were weighted to correct for equal selection probability.

The website added, "Gallup also weights its final samples to match the national demographics of each selected country."
